Midlands home building permits mixed in ’07

Richland County is suffering the most in the home-building downturn, according to U.S. Census data released today.

Builders took out permits to construct 814 fewer homes last year than in 2006.

The city of Columbia was a bright spot in 2007, with 33 more homes being permitted in 2007 than the previous year.

Here’s a breakdown of new-home permits issued last year:

-Richland County: 1,702, a 32 percent decrease from 2006
-Lexington County: 2,103, a 6 percent decrease
-Kershaw County: 483, a 1 percent increase
-City of Columbia: 700, a 5 percent increase
-Town of Lexington: 148, a 20 percent decrease
-Blythewood: 51, a 34 percent increase
-Camden: 27, the same as 2006
