A proposed 12-screen theater at The Mall at Shelter Cove is back on the table.

Town of Hilton Head Island Mayor Tom Peeples sent a letter to Town Council on Friday saying he intends to put the theater issue on the June 3 council agenda.

The council tied 3-3 in early April when it voted on whether mall ownership should continue working with town staff to create an agreement for a theater at the struggling mall. A tie meant the vote failed, and the theater issue was dead.

But Ward 1 Councilman Bill Ferguson, who missed that meeting for health reasons, wrote in a letter to Peeples dated May 5, that “the Mall has been a good corporate citizen of the Town.”

Ferguson also wrote that the theater idea “has merit, and it is a proposition that I would like to be able to voice my opinion on.”

“(M)any residents of Ward 1 have told me that they support the efforts of the owners of The Mall at Shelter Cove to add a movie theater to the Mall,” Ferguson’s letter says.

Peeples’ letter says he is seeking to put the issue back on the agenda based on Ferguson’s letter.

Calls to Ferguson and Peeples were not returned Friday afternoon.

At issue will not be approval of a theater plan, but a motion for the mall owners and town staff to come up with a development agreement for the project. That agreement also would need council approval.
