Recent building moratoriums in Dorchester County and permit quotas in Mount Pleasant have pushed the development of a 62,000-square-foot entertainment complex to Berkeley County, said one of the partners in the project.

Starmax Entertainment Group of Mount Pleasant plans to build the complex in Goose Creek to include up to 12 stadium-style movie theaters, 24 bowling lanes, two arcades, a food court and a sports bar.

A developer of large-scale family entertainment venues, Starmax will locate the complex in the Cobblestone Village on U.S. Highway 176.

“That’s where the growth pattern is. Between our project and what Carnes is doing, there is a tremendous amount of growth at that corner at (U.S. highways) 176 and 17A,” said Catalyst Development partner Katie Homrich.

Homrich said when the concept for the development began, Mount Pleasant was instituting building permit limits, and recent building moratoriums in Summerville and Dorchester County made the Carnes Crossroads location more attractive. Now with other development coming to Berkeley County, including a new high school, Google, Harris Teeter and several housing developments, the Starmax plan fits perfectly, she said.

“Berkeley County is definitely coming along,” Homrich said. “The high school is the driver, though; it looks like a mini-university.”

Cobblestone Village is an 80-acre mixed-use project being developed by Catalyst Development Co. It includes a 320-unit apartment complex, Cobblestone Village Apartments by Carroll Investment Group and Marrington Villas, 104 garden homes being developed by Epcon Communities.

The Starmax theater complex is scheduled for completion in early 2009. The company also has an entertainment complex in Gaffney and plans another complex in Orangeburg.

Homrich said Starmax will bring a wide variety of much-needed entertainment to Goose Creek and surrounding communities.
